In the US, is payment for a nanny made upfront or later?

Similar to childcare services, it's standard practice in the US nanny service industry to pay upfront.

US domestic service companies generally require Chinese employers to pay the following two installments in advance:

    1. Agency Fees for Nanny Services

Nanny service fees are generally annual, amounting to approximately 100% of the nanny's monthly salary. This fee covers the advertising and maintenance costs for domestic service agencies specializing in international clients, as well as post-service maintenance costs such as coordinating service issues or replacing nannies.

Some Chinese employers request monthly payments, which depends on negotiation with the international domestic service agency. Monthly agency fees are generally higher than annual payments, as the cost of acquiring each client doesn't vary depending on the length of service; moreover, many nannies and domestic service agencies are unwilling to provide short-term nanny services (only a few months).

    2. Nanny's First Month's Salary

This fee is the initial payment from the Chinese employer to the live-in nanny. It is held by the international domestic service agency and paid to the nanny monthly. It's important to note that in the US, domestic service agencies do not deduct fees from the nanny's monthly salary; their profit comes from the agency fee.

For services provided within the contract period, the Chinese employer must pay the monthly salary in advance, which is held by the agency and paid to the nanny upon completion of the month's service. The nanny only needs to perform her duties; any issues, especially regarding salary, are handled by the agency. Note that for holidays like Christmas, double pay or tips are paid directly to the nanny by the Chinese employer. The daily wage is calculated by dividing the nanny's monthly salary by 26 days.

What factors influence a nanny's salary?

In major US cities, such as Flushing, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island in New York City; the San Francisco Bay Area, Silicon Valley, and the East Bay; and Orange County, Irvine, Arcadia, Rowland Heights, and Beverly Hills in Los Angeles, a nanny's salary is determined by her level of care and the amount of work she does. Whether live-in or commuter, the work primarily revolves around caring for the elderly, children, the sick, and household chores. The greater the workload, the higher the level of caregiver hired, and the higher the price.

Nannies are categorized as entry-level, intermediate, advanced, and top-tier. The higher the level, the higher the price. Higher-tier cities with higher cost of living also tend to have higher expectations of employers, leading to higher overall prices for nannies.
